Google has unveiled a new AI model called Gemini, which it claims can outperform human experts in a range of intelligence tests.
The company says that Gemini is its “most capable” AI model yet, and that it has advanced “reasoning capabilities” that allow it to “think more carefully” when answering hard questions.
Gemini was tested on its problem-solving and knowledge in 57 subject areas, including maths and humanities. Google CEO Sundar Pichai said that Gemini’s performance represents a “new era” for AI.
The company says that Gemini is not a product in its own right, but rather a “foundational model” that will be integrated into existing Google tools, such as search and Bard. Google also claims that Gemini outperforms OpenAI’s GPT-4 platform on 30 of the 32 widely-used academic benchmarks.
However, OpenAI is due to release a new, more powerful version of its software next year, and Elon Musk’s xAI is also seeking to raise up to $1bn to invest in AI research and development. Chinese firm Baidu is also racing ahead with its own AI products.
As AI technology rapidly evolves, so do fears about its potential to cause harm. Governments around the world are trying to develop rules or even legislation to contain the possible future risks of AI.
