Russian President Vladimir Putin has reportedly found a new confidante in Ekaterina “Katya” Mizulina, a 39-year-old London-educated woman known for her role as the head of Russia’s Safe Internet League. According to reports from Ukrainian media, Mizulina, the daughter of pro-Putin and anti-Ukrainian Senator Elena Mizulina, has gained the nickname of Putin’s “morality guardian” as she actively censors internet criticism, particularly related to the conflict in Ukraine.

Mizulina, who holds a degree in art history and Indonesian language from the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London, is said to have caught Putin’s attention with her hardline approach to suppressing dissent online. Social media outlets in Russia and Ukraine have speculated on the closeness between the Russian president and Mizulina, drawing comparisons to Putin’s previous relationships.

Russian human rights campaigner Olga Romanova remarked, “Katya Mizulina is completely to Putin’s taste. This Barbie [type] has always suited him very well,” drawing parallels to Svetlana Krivonogikh, a former lover of Putin and mother of his love child Luiza. Mizulina’s appearance and demeanor are rumored to have a unique appeal to the 71-year-old Russian leader.

Mizulina, who previously worked as a translator for official Russian delegations visiting China, is known for advocating internet censorship, fines, and sanctions against media and social networks. In a recent incident, she demanded an apology from a student who questioned compulsory military service during a meeting with students, using Putin’s strict laws as a threat.

While Putin has long been associated with Olympic gymnast Alina Kabaeva, the reports suggest that Mizulina has become a significant figure in his inner circle. As the details of this purported relationship continue to emerge, it remains to be seen how it may impact both Putin’s personal life and his stance on internet censorship in Russia.
