TIANJIN: Researchers in China have unveiled a groundbreaking organic lithium-ion battery that combines high performance, safety, and resilience in extreme conditions, promising a new era in energy storage.

Chinese scientists have developed an innovative organic lithium-ion battery capable of operating in extreme environments while offering enhanced safety and flexibility.

Published Thursday in Nature, the research was led by Professor Xu Yunhua of Tianjin University in collaboration with the South China University of Technology.

Most conventional batteries rely on inorganic cathodes like cobalt and nickel, which face challenges of scarcity, rigidity, and reduced performance in harsh conditions. The team engineered a novel organic cathode material that is both abundant and environmentally sustainable.

Tests showed the battery achieves an energy density exceeding 250 watt-hours per kilogram, outperforming conventional lithium iron phosphate designs.

It also demonstrated remarkable durability, maintaining structural integrity and full capacity across temperatures from –70°C to 80°C, while passing puncture safety tests without fire or thermal runaway.

Professor Xu highlighted that the technology overcomes traditional battery limitations, offering commercial-level energy density with superior safety and operational range.

The team is now working to scale the innovation for industrial production and plans to establish a pilot manufacturing line.
