Amidst the heartbreaking Israeli-Palestinian conflict, an incredible incident happened that presented us to Gaza’s wonder child, Makkah.

Dareen, a 28-year-old woman in the latter stages of her third pregnancy, was hanging laundry on her Rafah balcony in the southern Gaza Strip on a fateful Saturday, October 21, when an Israeli strike took place. She fell from the third floor to a neighbor’s house below as a result of the hit. After barely avoiding the blow, her husband, Ayman Abu Shamalah, ran to discover his wife on the ground. Amazingly, after the terrible fall, she was still alive.

The heartbreaking request in Dareen’s final words to Ayman was, “Ayman, take Makkah out of my belly and take care of her,” according to AFP. She had been so severely scarred by the explosion that Ayman could only recognize her by the clothes she wore. Reiterating that this was Dareen’s last request, he begged the physician at the Abu Yousef Al Najjar hospital, where her body was transferred, to rescue their unborn child.

The infant, Makkah, was brought immediately to the pediatric ward at the Emirates Red Crescent Hospital in Rafah after the medical team conducted an emergency Caesarean section.

Ayman clarified that his family had taken refuge with relatives in Rafah after fleeing the bombardment in Gaza City. Sadly, his wife, children, and four other relatives—two of them were children—were killed when Israeli forces destroyed the building they were residing in. It was also the birthday that three-year-old Adam and his nine-year-old sister, Sham, shared when they were killed in an Israeli strike in southern Gaza along with their mother. Their distraught father revealed that he had been on the stairs during the strike and had just missed his family’s terrible demise.

Around 8,000 people have died as a result of Israeli bombardment within Gaza, the bulk of them civilians, including about 3,800 children, according to the health ministry run by Hamas in Gaza.

When Makkah arrived, his condition was so bad that he had to be put on a ventilator right away. Sadly, her initial prognosis is not promising because of the oxygen deprivation that occurred between her mother’s death and her birth, and she may experience long-term consequences. A sympathetic physician comforted Ayman Abu Shamalah as he stood beside his small daughter’s incubator and started crying. The incubator’s name tag says, “Baby of the martyr Dareen Abu Shamalah,” and his birthdate is October 21, which also happens to be the day his other two children and their mother were tragically lost.
