On Thursday, South Africa said that it has found its first case of monkeypox, joining the ranks of over 40 other countries that have found people with the disease.
“The patient is a 30-year-old male from Johannesburg who has no travel history,” Health Minister Joe Phaahla said at a news conference. “Since the patient does not have a history of travel, it is not possible to link this to having been acquired outside of South Africa.”
“In collaboration with the appropriate health authorities, we have initiated the process of contact tracing.”
The first signs and symptoms of monkeypox include frequently a high fever, swollen lymph nodes, and a rash that is blistery and similar to that of chickenpox.
In most cases, patients experience very mild symptoms and make a full recovery within two to three weeks.
Last week, the World Health Organization said that Europe was still the region where the majority of cases of monkeypox were being reported.
On Thursday, the health-related body of the United Nations is scheduled to host an emergency meeting to discuss whether or not the global monkeypox outbreak should be designated as a public health emergency of international significance.
