In the Low Pearl Basin surrounding Guangdong and Guangxi, the rains disrupted supply, production and transportation. Authorities in northeastern Jiangxi Province have issued a flood warning after 485,000 people were injured in nine districts, Xinhua reported. According to the Xinhua News Agency, the region suffered an economic loss of 470 million yuan ($ 70.2 million or 57 pounds). 43,300 hectares of crops were destroyed.

Local officials have warned that the situation will worsen in the future and that the water level in the Pearl River basin will continue to rise. According to the National Meteorological Center of China, the average rainfall in Guangdong, Fujian and Guangxi provinces from early May to mid-June was 621 mm, the highest since 1961.

The rainy summer season in southern China is leading to frequent floods, but there are concerns that climate change will exacerbate the situation. Instead, many northern regions of the country are expected to experience unusually high temperatures, followed by rain.
