Supreme Court in China’s Henan province is accused of restricting the use of coronavirus by residents after rare protests.

Some say they have been forced to quarantine, close public transport or enter buildings. According to the Chinese press, many are like the customers of rural banks who are struggling to secure cash.

Banks shut down deposits, sparking outrage last month. Since then, Chinese banking and insurance authorities have ordered the bank to investigate.

It is estimated that more than 39 billion yuan (£ 5 billion, $ 6 billion) has been frozen, affecting hundreds of thousands of consumers.

In many cities in China, residents use the Health Code app to access buildings and shops, use public transportation, or leave the city. Users must scan a QR code before logging in and display the color-coded “health status” on their phone. If the condition turns red, it means that the person has recently been tested positive or suspected of having COVID-19 and has been quarantined for 14 days.

On Tuesday, some residents noticed that their condition turned red when they tried to enter a train station, building or hotel. It is not known how many people were injured, but Chinese reports say the problem has occurred in several cities and towns in Henan.

Customers from four banks in other provinces who visited Zhengzhou, the capital of Henan Province, faced similar problems. A customer of a bank in Zhengzhou told the news channel that his condition was red, but he had never been in contact with a confirmed situation and a recent test tested negative.

He said that health workers asked him to come and stay at home and refused to explain why his condition suddenly turned red. Some of the victims are consumer families. A woman from Zumadane, 200 kilometers (124 miles) from Zhengzhou, said she was taken to a mandatory quarantine hotel when her condition turned red. “I’m not a customer, my father invested in one of the banks,” he told a news channel. “I can’t retire now.”

He said: “I went to Zhengzhou to check on the recent situation. When he returned, his condition deteriorated. The current situation has changed to red, and the whole family is isolating itself. ”

An official with the Zhengzhou Health Committee told news channel Chinese that many bank customers face the same problem. “It simply came to our notice then. At this time, you can only apply to community managers (change your status). If you pass two crown tests in three days, your condition may change, “he said.

The movement has raised questions about Chinese social media, pointing out that many may abuse the authority of officials. Renowned Chinese critic and former newspaper editor Hu Xijin said “health codes” should only be used to prevent epidemics.

“It is a violation of the Law on the Prevention of Infectious Diseases for a region to use the health law to restrict the movement of people for other purposes.” And it hurts the support of those who want to fight our virus. ”

In April, Kaifeng’s New East Bank, Zhecheng Huanghui Community Bank, Shanghai Huimin County Bank and Yuzhou Xin Ming Sheng Rural Bank froze their customers’ assets. Since then, thousands of consumers have flocked to Zhengzhou to make money.

Thousands took to the streets to protest before police held a rally on May 23. China’s Banking and Insurance Regulatory Commission said last month that a company called Henan New Fortune, a major shareholder in rural banks, had used third-party platforms or monetary intermediaries to secure public funds. The company is accused of committing financial crimes and is currently being investigated by the authorities.
