Two Canadians, one wanted by Interpol, were found stabbed in the Mexican city of Playa del Carmen in the Caribbean, prosecutors said on Tuesday.

Prosecutors in Quintana Row, a resort like Cancun and Tulum, said Monday that a man and a woman were found dead in a hotel or apartment in the resort, and a third were injured. Exact information on their names and places of residence was not available.

“The Canadian government is aware of the deaths of two Canadians in Mexico,” the Canadian Foreign Ministry said in a statement. Playa del Carmen has suffered several incidents of violence involving foreigners, including the recent killing of two Canadians at a local resort in January over debts between gangs involved in the international drug and arms trade.

In March, police in Playa del Carmen found the bodies of four abandoned near their homes. The fact that the bodies are left together in the bushes near the entrance suggests a gang-type murder.
Elsewhere, along the beautiful Maya Riviera coast of Mexico’s tourism industry, a series of brutal acts of violence took place.

In November, a shooting took place on Puerto Morelos Beach, north of Playa del Carmen, killing two drug traffickers. Authorities said the 15 gunmen were members of a criminal gang challenging drug control there. In late October, south of Tulum, two tourists (a California-born travel blogger born in India and the other German) were killed in a fierce fight between rival drug traffickers.
