While increasing pressure for the invasion of Ukraine, the US has slapped sanctions on a large list of Russian leaders and businesses in an effort to thwart any attempts to restore its severely damaged defense industry.

A neo-Nazi fighter group, senior Russian and pro-Russian officials in occupied parts of Ukraine, a children’s rights official who allegedly orders the deportation of Ukrainian children to Russia, top Russian securities market officials, and all of these individuals were added to the US blacklist on Thursday.

Maxim Oreshkin, a senior economic advisor to President Vladimir Putin, and the GRU intelligence organization were also added to sanctions lists.

US sanctions against Russian space, computer, and technology companies were imposed concurrently in an effort to limit Russian technological advancement and hinder its capacity to upgrade and modernize its military in the wake of significant losses in the Ukraine.

Due to allegations that they encouraged or helped Russians steal Ukrainian grain, five Russian officials were placed on the blacklist.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken stated that “the United States continues to hold the Russian government accountable for its conflict against Ukraine.”

“Those designated today, from violent offenders to an official who enabled the deliberate transfer of children from Ukraine, are instances of the behavior that has become synonymous with the Russian government’s unprovoked war,” he said.

Education for patriotism

US Treasury sanctions aim to block any assets that those designated may have that are subject to US jurisdiction and prohibit any US individuals or businesses from doing business with them, including foreign banks with US operations, effectively limiting their access to the world’s financial networks.

Justice officials in the annexed Crimea and members of Ramzan Kadyrov’s family, including three of his wives, were singled out for penalties.

The Russian president’s commissioner for children’s rights, Maria Alexeyevna Lvova-Belova, was placed on the Treasury’s blacklist.

According to the Treasury, Lvova-Belova worked closely with Putin and oversaw the repatriation of hundreds of Ukrainian children to Russia.

“Lvova-efforts Belova’s specifically include the forced adoption of Ukrainian children into Russian families, the so-called “patriotic education” of Ukrainian children, legislative changes to hasten the process of granting Ukrainian children citizenship in the Russian Federation, and the purposeful removal of Ukrainian children by Russian forces,” the statement read.

Choosing Russian technology

Additionally, the US increased its efforts to isolate Russian industry, especially high-tech companies, from the international market in an effort to deny them access to foreign finance and components.

Thirty-one businesses, including three that produce space instrumentation, satellites, and space defense gear, were added to the State Department’s list of entities subject to sanctions.

Others on the list work on engine technologies, nanotechnologies, quantum computing, and semiconductor development.
