A lawyer for Republican Rep.-elect George Santos of New York attacked The New York Times on Monday, hours after it disclosed he misrepresented some of his qualifications in a successful campaign last month.

Santos, 34, defeated Democrat Robert Zimmerman to win New York’s 3rd Congressional District.

The Times questioned some of Santos’ statements about his biography on the campaign trail, claiming it couldn’t corroborate some of his purported qualifications.

Unsubstantiated honors include assertions that Santos worked at Citigroup and Goldman Sachs, which were published on his campaign website but could not be verified. The article put doubt on Santos’ educational history, claiming Baruch College authorities couldn’t find his name and date of birth for 2010, the year he said he graduated.

Baruch and New York University representatives told NBC New York they have no record of his attendance. NBC New York asked Citigroup and Goldman Sachs about his employment.

In a statement Monday, Santos’ lawyer, Joseph Murray, denied the story and suggested Santos constituted a threat to Democrats.

“After four years in the public glare and on the verge of being sworn in, the New York Times starts this shotgun burst of insults,” Murray remarked. “It’s no surprise that Congressman-elect Santos has adversaries at the New York Times who are defaming him. “You have enemies? Good. It signifies you’ve stood up for something.”

PolitiFact says the remark appears in Victor Hugo’s 1845 essay “Villemain” and predates Churchill.

Santos, 34, became the first LGBTQ non-incumbent Republican elected to Congress in November, defeating Democrats in Long Island and Queens.

Santos will replace Tom Suozzi, a Democrat who lost the governor’s primary. 2020 election: Santos lost to Suozzi.
