In an effort to combat climate change, a student who founded a litter-picking group intends to go to 30 cities in 30 days throughout the UK.

Plogging, or collecting trash while running, is a practice that Vivek Gurav has been engaging in in Bristol. He has collected 5,000 kg of trash so far.

Mr. Gurav, 26, said: “I want to set-up a UK-wide plogging community like I did back in India.”

He added he wanted to inspire people so they could “start their own groups”.

In his hometown of Pune, India, Mr. Gurav, who relocated to Bristol last year to pursue a master’s degree in environmental policy and management, first began a community plogging effort.

He has completed 120 “plogging expeditions” totaling 420 miles (675 km) over the past four years by picking up litter.

In recognition of his plogging efforts, Mr. Gurav appeared on The One Show and was presented with a special award by former Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

The new prime minister, Rishi Sunak, invited him to 10 Downing Street in October, and in November, he spoke at COY17, the youth-focused counterpart to COP27, the climate summit.

Mr. Gurav, who studies at the University of Bristol, said: “The climate conference was amazing and a real opportunity. The award from the prime minister really motivated me to do more, and going to 10 Downing Street, that was the best thing that has happened to me.”

The 26-year-old plans to use public transportation to travel to every city in the nation to clean up rubbish. He hopes to be joined by other bloggers, environmentalists, and avid runners.

Mr. Gurav will be making stops in Derby, Nottingham, Leeds, Sheffield, Manchester, Liverpool, Leicester, Birmingham, and Worcester during the month of December.

Considering that mental health was a “important part” of the plogging community he had established in India, he also expects that the community initiative will have a “good effect” on it.

His volunteers there have gathered more than a million kg of trash over the last four years.

He said: “Now I get asked all the time by Indian people how they can come and study in the UK. They want to follow my path. It feels good to be able to help.”

He claims he wants to make India and the rest of the globe more sustainable by applying the skills he learnt in the UK.
