A veteran of the Vietnam War entered a liquor store, on a chilly December day in Massachusetts,  Like he had done for more than 20 years, he played the lottery.

Don’t simply buy one ticket, buy six, his gut urged him. Use the exact same digits on each ticket, not just any numbers.

As fate would have it, Raymond Roberts’ winning numbers were valued $390,000 (£324,000) each in cash.

For five of the tickets, Mr. Roberts opted to accept a lump amount, collecting a total of over $2 million (£1.6 million).

He selected the annuity option for the sixth ticket, which entitles him to 20 payments of $25,000 each year.

The lottery offers a fixed prize for accurately selecting five balls, like Mr. Roberts did, thus it’s conceivable to have several wins using the same numbers.

Mr. Roberts meticulously crafted a combination of birthdays and anniversary dates for his winning numbers.

Even though he had used them on other days and other lottery tickets, he had come up empty.

The veteran received his prizes on December 15 in Fall River, Massachusetts, which is located 80 kilometers (50 miles) south of Boston.

So what is he going to do with his sudden wealth?

According to the lottery, he will initially purchase a motorcycle.

Mr. Roberts played the game Lucky for Life, and in fact, some people might refer to him as such.

The odds of winning just the $25,000 every year for life prize are one in 1,813,028 according to the game’s rules.

More than anywhere else in the US, Massachusetts residents spend the most per person on lottery and scratch-off tickets.
