in Mexico City Authorities in Mexico City reported that two subway trains collided between two stations on Saturday, causing at least one fatality and 41 injuries.

Without providing any additional information regarding the cause of the collision between the Potrero and La Raza stations, Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum stated on her Twitter account that it occurred on Line 3 of the capital’s Metro system.

According to Sheinbaum, 57 people were hurt and transferred to seven hospitals after one woman died. For a while, four people—including the train driver, who was said to be in bad condition—were trapped inside the debris. The mayor announced that 26 of the injured had been freed late in the day.

Ambulances and rescue crews also arrived to treat the injured as scores of police officers and troops poured into the neighbouring metro stations.

Electrician Edgar Montiel, who was aboard one of the trains, expressed his gratitude for having opted to board the next-to-last vehicle as opposed to the last one, which was destroyed in the collision.

It had a powerful sound. When I felt the car’s sheets bend and hurl me, I just closed my eyes, Montiel told The Associated Press.

In the midst of screaming and shouts for help, he claimed to have remained on the car floor among many other passengers.

“The subway lost power, and a lot of smoke started to emerge that was suffocating us.

The people inside Montiel’s automobile had to wait for paramedics to attend to the injured and assist everyone in getting out of the vehicle, according to Montiel, who was wearing a bandage on his left arm and shoulder.

On his Twitter account, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador expressed regret for the accident and stated that the federal government was assisting local authorities in their investigation.

A portion of the elevated subway system collapsed in May 2021, killing 26 people and injuring up to 100 others. Following an inquiry, ten previous officials were charged with homicide, injury, and property damage. The structural failure was attributed to flaws in the construction process.

There are 195 stations and 141 miles of track in the Mexico City subway system.
