Cameroon has limited travel along its border with Equatorial Guinea, according to Minister of Public Health Malachie Manaouda on Friday.

Following “many inexplicable deaths” from an unidentified illness that causes hemorrhagic fever.

He stated in a statement that the limits were put in place due to “the significant risk of importing this disease and in order to detect and respond to any instances at an early stage.”

With the assistance of specialists from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the World Health Organization (WHO), investigations are currently underway, and epidemiological surveillance has been reinforced.

“At the current stage … there is no reason to be worried,” Malachie said.

In a statement released on Wednesday, Equatorial Guinea stated that it has seen a “exceptional epidemiological condition” in recent weeks in the Nsok Nsomo district of the Kie-Ntem province that resulted in nine deaths in two nearby communities in a brief period of time.

The health ministry’s crisis commission announced the ninth fatality on Thursday.

The symptoms that were seen included fever, weakness, bloody vomit, and diarrhea.

A team was dispatched to separate contact cases and collect samples, which were then delivered to a nearby WHO lab for analysis.

A mom and her two children were brought to the hospital, where they underwent little treatment and later made a full recovery.

A WHO representative stated that the organization was assisting the examination of samples to determine what caused the deaths and that results should be available in the next few days.

According to Cameroon, some 20 fatalities were reported in communities in the Kie-Ntem province of Equatorial Guinea, which borders the Olamze district of Cameroon, on Wednesday.
