Authorities said three children were killed and two others were injured in an incident reported Friday in Italy, Texas, a small town south of Dallas.
The incident’s circumstances were unknown. At an evening news conference, Ellis County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Jerry Cozby announced the arrest of a suspect. The suspect has not been identified publicly.
“We believe that there is no danger to the public at this time,” he said.
The sheriff’s office previously described the incident as a “isolated incident.”
Sheriff’s investigators were called to a home in a residential area near an elementary school and a Catholic church shortly after 4 p.m., according to the deputy.
According to the earlier statement, Italy, Texas, police were on the scene and asked the sheriff’s office for assistance with a death investigation.
“When we arrived we found multiple victims on scene,” Cozby said. “Three deceased victims were found inside the home. All victims were children. Two children were taken to local hospitals.”
The identities of the three children who died, as well as the conditions of the injured children, have not been made public.
Cozby described the investigation as “fluid,” and no additional information was immediately released.
Italy is 44 miles south of Dallas and has a population of about 2,300 people.
