Early life and Education

Munib Akhtar was born on 14 December 1963. He was educated at Aitchison College, Lahore where he completed his O-Level in 1979 and A-Level in 1981. He graduated with a B.A. from Government College, Lahore, in 1983.

Munib Akhtar graduated with B.A. Economics from Princeton University, USA, in 1986. During his studies, he completed a 150-page long senior thesis titled “Pakistan and South Korea 1947 — 1970: A Comparative Analysis of Economic Development.”

After returning back home, he received his law degree and graduated with LL.B from Punjab University in 1989 before starting his legal career.

Munib Akhtar started his law career by enrolling as an Advocate of the Subordinate Courts in 1990. He enrolled as an Advocate of the Sindh High Court in 1992. Several years later, he enrolled as an Advocate of the Supreme Court of Pakistan in 2009.

During his legal career, Munib Akhtar has practiced at the Supreme Court, Sindh High Court and all High Courts. He was a civil lawyer focusing on commercial, corporate, arbitration and taxation.

Sindh High Court

Munib Akhtar was elevated to the Sindh High Court Bench as Additional Judge on 25 September 2009. He was confirmed as Permanent Judge of the Sindh High Court in 2012.

Have sat on benches in all areas including civil, corporate, criminal, tax, and labour laws at the Sindh High Court’s Principal Seat in Karachi and at Sukkur and Hyderabad.

He has remained chairman or member of various committees including the Civil Rules Committee, I.T. Committee, Judicial Studies Board, Promotion Committee, and Procurement Committee. He also served as Monitoring Judge in various situations.

He is a Member Board of Governors, Institute of Business Studies (IBA) from 2009 onwards. He has also taught law at Hamdard University Law School.

Supreme Court of Pakistan

Justice Munib Akhtar was elevated as Judge of the Supreme Court of Pakistan on 8 May 2018.

According to the seniority list, Akhtar will become the 32nd Chief Justice of Pakistan on 28 November 2027. He will retire from service on 13 December 2028.
