Facebook News, initiated in 2019 with significant deals with news publishers, is now coming to an end, as announced by Meta. The company plans to discontinue Facebook News in the U.S. and Australia in early April, following a similar move in the U.K., France, and Germany. Meta stated that this decision aligns with their focus on prioritizing products and services based on user preferences, particularly short-form video content.

Moreover, Meta’s move puts it in opposition to Australia’s 2021 News Media and Digital Platforms Mandatory Bargaining Code, which mandates large digital platforms to pay for Australian news content. Despite the discontinuation of Facebook News, Meta assures that news content will still be accessible on the platform.

In a separate development, Elon Musk’s company, X, faced a tough day in court as it sued the nonprofit organization, The Center for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH), alleging violations of X’s terms of service and other illegal activities. However, during the court hearing, the judge seemed skeptical of X’s arguments, particularly regarding defamation claims.

Furthermore, Elon Musk has filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, the organization he co-founded, alleging breach of contract and unfair business practices. Musk aims to compel OpenAI to adhere to its original mission of developing AI for public benefit and seeks the return of funds he invested. The lawsuit criticizes OpenAI’s partnership with Microsoft and questions the capabilities of its AI models, including GPT-4.

Lastly, AI researcher Gary Marcus emphasizes the need for a paradigm shift in AI research, advocating for neurosymbolic AI over large language models like GPT. Marcus highlights the complexity of intelligence and ethical challenges, underscoring the long road ahead in achieving Artificial General Intelligence (AGI).
