According to director Peyton Reed, the introduction of Kang the Conqueror (Jonathan Majors) in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania is going to change the MCU forever and pose a threat unlike anything that has ever been seen.

Phase 5 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is beginning with the introduction of the new big bad for the Avengers to face after a broad and varied beginning to the Multiverse Saga in the MCU left without a truly singular threat that could bring Earth’s Mightiest Heroes together for a dramatic showdown.

Kang, of course, was first introduced to us through Loki, a Disney+ series that introduced viewers to the idea of multiverse-based character variations.

This theme was later developed in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. In Loki, Kang appears as “He Who Remains,” a man at the end of time who founded the Time Variance Authority and is the only one capable of averting a multiversal conflict that could cause destruction and the apocalypse across countless universes. Reed said to spectators at CCXP 2022 in Brazil:

“We’re starting off Phase 5 in a big, big way. This is the biggest adventure that Ant-Man and Wasp have ever gone on. We’re going to strange places and we’re encountering an antagonist that’s unlike anything they’ve ever experienced — and that includes Thanos. I think that He Who Remains in Loki is very different than Kang the Conqueror in our movie. They’re Variants, but they’re extremely different people. Kang is someone who has dominion over time, but he conserves his energy. He’s a very, very scary character to deal with, as Ant-Man and Wasp will find out first hand.”

Kevin Feige, the president and producer of Marvel Studios, increased the anticipation for the movie by noting that “Ant-Man ended Phase 2. And now, [Ant-Man is] kicking off Phase 5 in such a huge way, much like Scott Lang himself going from this petty criminal to saving the world in Endgame. I love that the Ant-Man franchise is now at the peak of the MCU and kicking off Phase 5.”

Given that Thanos defeated the Avengers and, in fact, half of the universe by himself in Avengers: Infinity War, it is clear that any antagonist who poses a greater threat than the Mad Titan must be taken seriously.

Even though the Avengers repaired the damage, Thanos died a hero in his own eyes for having carried out his master plan.

On February 17, 2023, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania debuts in theatres.

The cast includes Jonathan Majors, Michelle Pfeiffer, Kathryn Newton, Michael Douglas, Bill Murray, and Paul Rudd.
