According to reports, a Los Angeles County judge approved the legal identity of Dwyane Wade’s transgender daughter, Zaya on Friday after her “proud” father had asked the court for permission in August 2022.

As of right now, the adolescent is legally a woman; her full legal name is Zaya Malachi Airamis Wade.

In February 2020, Zaya, whom Dwyane has with his ex-wife Siohvaughn Funches, came out as trans.

After eight years of marriage, the retired NBA player and Funches, who separated in 2010, had different ideas on how to approach the situation.

While Funches, also 41, has charged that her ex “pressed” their child to “go forward” with a name and gender transition “in order to benefit on financial prospects,” the athlete, 41, has continuously fought for Zaya’s ability to “live more comfortably and honestly in all aspects of her life.”

“Although it definitely would have been better for Zaya’s mother to be supportive of this critical portion of Zaya’s journey, Zaya should not be compelled to put her life on hold while she waits for Siohvaughn to recognize and accept her truth,” Dwyane wrote in a November 2022 filing.

He continued by outlining how the desired changes to Zaya’s identification would serve her “best interest … from simple introductions and food orders to applying for a driver’s license and filling out college applications.”

But, Funches argued that she preferred Zaya wait until she became 18 to make the changes herself. Funches referenced her daughter’s deceased name, “Zion,” in her argument.

The basketball player responded on social media, writing, ““I’m very disappointed that [Funches] continuously finds ways of centering herself and HER needs, without regard to her children.”

He referred to his ex, with whom he also has a 21-year-old son named Zaire, as an “absent parent” who, according to charges Funches said were “totally incorrect,” failed to communicate with Zaya’s “teachers, physicians, and therapist” about her apparent worries.

Kaavia, a 4-year-old daughter of Dwyane and Gabrielle Union, is one of their children, and Dwyane continued to write that they would never “force Zaya or any of [their] children to do anything against their will, much less force an identity on them.”

Dwyane stated in his initial request that since he had sole custody since 2011, he has “complete authority” to move forward without Funches’ approval, but that he had informed her as a “courtesy.”

Also, he co-parents Xavier, a 9-year-old boy, with Aja Metoyer.
