Danish Prince Joachim is visiting the United States. Prince Joachim and Princess Marie will be relocating to Washington, D.C., the palace announced on Friday. On September 1, the second son of Queen Margrethe will begin a new position at the Danish Embassy under the Ministry of Defense, enhancing defense industry collaboration with the United States and Canada going forward.

Prince Joachim and his “family,” which is believed to refer to the couple’s two children, daughters Athena, 11, and boy Henrik, 13, will move, according to the announcement. Nikolai, 23, and Felix, 20, are sons from Joachim’s first marriage to Alexandra, Countess of Frederiksborg.

Four years ago, Princess Marie, 47, and Prince Joachim, 53, emigrated to France. According to the palace, Prince Joachim started France’s highest-ranking military training program as an addition to the Prince’s ongoing dedication to the Defense. The Prince and Princess joined the Danish Embassy in Paris as the Defense Attaché and Special Culture Representative, respectively, after completing their studies.

The revelation follows Queen Margrethe’s announcement last year that she will be removing the prince or princess titles and “His/Her Highness” styling from the four children of Prince Joachim. Instead, they adopted the titles of His Excellency the Count of Monpezat or Her Excellency the Countess of Monpezat at the beginning of 2023.

The Danish royal family was upset by the announcement. Prince Joachim told the media that he was taken by surprise by the revelation and asserted that he had only been given five days’ notice. However, Queen Margrethe insisted that the arrangements had been in place for some time and that the choice was taken for her grandchildren’s benefit.

The monarch apologized shortly after the news was revealed, claiming that she had “underestimated” the impact the shock would have on the family’s dynamic and describing the shift as “essential future-proofing of the monarchy.”

One royal resident is departing the kingdom as Prince Joachim and Princess Marie prepare to settle there. The Swedish palace revealed earlier this month that Princess Madeleine of Sweden, who has lived in Florida since 2018 with her husband and their three children, will return to her native Sweden.

In a statement, HRH Princess Madeleine and Mr. Christopher O’Neill stated that they would be relocating to Stockholm, Sweden “indefinitely,” together with their children. They will live in an apartment at the Royal Stables in Stockholm.

In the fall, their two eldest children, Princess Leonore, 9, and Prince Nicolas, 7, will enter elementary school in Stockholm, while Princess Adrienne, 4, will start preschool.

In the United States, Prince Joachim will reside alongside some other royals. In 2020, after resigning from their positions as members of the British royal family, Prince Harry, and Meghan Markle moved to her native California. They have a 3-year-old son named Prince Archie and a 1-year-old daughter named Princess Lilibet, and they all reside in Montecito.

Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie, two royal sisters (and Prince Harry’s cousins), have also recently resided in the United States.

Former Japanese Princess Mako renounced her throne in order to wed her college sweetheart. In 2021, the pair relocated to New York City, where Mako allegedly obtained employment as a curator assistant at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
