Elisabeth Finch, a former Grey’s Anatomy writer, admitted to telling huge lies about her personal life, particularly her battle with cancer.

Finch is coming clean months after she was put on administrative leave from the venerable ABC medical drama and later resigned from her position in response to a March 17 allegation by The Ankler newsletter that she might have “fabricated medical details from her own life.”

“I told a lie when I was 34 years old and it was the biggest mistake of my life. It just got bigger and bigger and bigger and got buried deeper and deeper inside me,” she told the outlet Dec. 7, adding, “I’ve never had any form of cancer.”

Finch went on, “My actions were improper. Not good. Messed up. Every single syllable”

Shonda Rhimes, the creator of Grey’s Anatomy, hired Finch to work on the program after she revealed in 2014 that she had been diagnosed with chondrosarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer. Her reported health battle was even used in a plot line.

She resigned from the program prior to a planned Disney assessment of the complaints after it became clear that her medical claims were, in fact, untrue. As a result, she was fired from the show. Finch later checked herself into a five-week stay at an in-patient treatment facility, as The Ankler, the publication that broke the story, noted in a recent article.

According to an unnamed former coworker who spoke to The Ankler, Finch went to great lengths to appear ill in front of her coworkers. The writer was described as a coworker “who lost her hair, whose skin was yellow and green, who had a visible chemo port bandage, who regularly took breaks to vomit, who only ate saltines for long periods of time, and who wrote and talked about her experiences all the time.”

Finch not only pretended to have cancer but also informed coworkers that her brother committed himself in 2019, according to The Ankler. He is actually alive and residing in Florida, according to the outlet.

Finch admitted that she missed her fellow series writers despite feeling bad about lying to her coworkers.

“One of the things that makes it so hard,” she admitted, “is that they did rally around a false narrative that I gave.”

She also hopes that by accepting responsibility, she will eventually be able to mend some of the relationships she lied about.

“I could only hope that the work that I’ve done will allow me back into those relationships,” Finch explained, “where I can say, ‘OK, I did this, I hurt a lot of people, and I’m also going to work my f–king ass off because this is where I want to be and I know what it’s like to lose everything.'”
