Mariah Carey captured a brand-new pre-show statement was unveiled by the producers in front of the illustrious audience at Sunday’s opening-night performance at the Shubert Theatre in New York City. Carey captured it.

Celebrities including Bette Midler, Debra Messing, Matthew Morrison, John Stamos, Andy Cohen, Uma Thurman, Jane Krakowski, Nathan Lane, Martin Short, Andrea Martin, Billy Eichner, Emily Mortimer, and Victor Garber could be seen watching the announcement on video, which is available.

In the audio clip, Carey said, “Welcome to the Shubert Theatre. Please put your cell phones away for a while, and keep in mind that using cameras and other recording equipment is strictly forbidden.

“And now, Some Like It Hot,” she said after introducing the programme.

The cast of Some Like It Hot heard about the announcement for the first time on Sunday night as they gathered on stage to toast the occasion before the performance.

In honor of their debut, Carey had given the performers bottles of champagne. Company members staged fainting fits as her voice resounded across the hall, and others gasped, applauded, and clapped.

But it wasn’t only on Sunday night. Each night at the theatre, Carey’s voice will greet ticket holders, tell them to put their phones on silent, and send them out to enjoy Some Like It Hot.

In late November, the musical legend joined the Some Like It Hot production crew. She claimed that her admiration for Marilyn Monroe, one of the show’s original actresses, was what drew her to the stage musical adaption of the 1959 MGM film of the same name.

“I originally learned about this tale from the classic movie starring Marilyn Monroe. She has served as a significant anchor in my life, so much so that I was able to purchase her priceless baby grand piano at an auction, Carey stated in a statement at the time. “I knew I had to be a part of it when [producer] Neil Meron shared this unique take on the iconic movie,” the author said.

“I’m delighted to help present Some Like It Hot for today’s world to new audiences to witness how this programme continues to build on the history of the film – pushing boundaries, encouraging inclusivity, and celebrating diversity.

This is the first Broadway production that Carey has ever produced.

Tony-winning composers Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman (Hairspray, Catch Me If You Can, Smash) provided the show’s jazzy, era-appropriate music, which includes the cheerful title song that was first published back in June. The musical is set in the Prohibition era.

Some Like It Hot tells the tale of two musicians who fled the Windy City after witnessing a mob hit. The movie is set in Chicago “when Prohibition had everyone yearning for a little excitement.” The show’s logline states, “With gangsters hard on their tails, they’re on the run as the newest members of the swing ingest big band ever to travel the country.” “Can they evade detection without losing themselves entirely? Or will they eventually be caught by the mob, the truth, and perhaps even love itself?

Along with writer and comedian Amber Ruffin (of Peacock’s The Amber Ruffin Show), Matthew Lopez, author of the Tony Award-winning best play The Inheritance, transformed the movie for the stage. Tony winner Casey Nicholaw is responsible for the directing and choreography (The Book of Mormon, The Prom, Aladdin, The Drowsy Chaperone, etc.).

Christian Borle, who plays Joe, J. Harrison Ghee, Adrianna Hicks, Kevin Del Aguila, NaTasha Yvette Williams, Sweet Sue, Adam Heller, Mark Lotito, and Angie Schworer serve as the company’s executives (as Minnie).
