Reneé Rapp, is much more at ease in her own skin in season two of The Sex Lives of College Girls, and the same can be said for the former Broadway star.

Rapp, 22, told reporters that she “loves” Leighton’s plot in the HBO Max series’ second episode. “This season, she has a lot more warmth about her, which I really enjoy.”

She is excited about her character’s development since the New York City aristocrat ultimately confesses to being homosexual to her father, her father’s companions Whitney (Alyah Chanelle Scott) and Bela (Amrit Kaur), and she starts openly dating women at Essex College.

The second season has been easier for Rapp to rejoice because of numerous behind-the-scenes developments in her personal life.

She continues, “I had different people in my life when the first season came out. “I felt really judged and uncomfortable, therefore I was really terrified for the show to come out.”

The majority of those people, according to Rapp, are “fortunately” no longer in her life, so the second season gave her a chance to genuinely celebrate the show’s success and appreciate Leighton’s character growth.

“I actually was very excited for the second season to come out because I felt much more comfortable to not be terrified to hear something either homophobic or slut-shaming, or things like that,” she says.

Rapp says it’s “definitely better this time around” in her own life because she no longer has to balance negative reactions to her role in the show as spoiled Leighton starts to develop genuine relationships with her three roommates Whitney, Bela, and Kimberly (Pauline Chalamet), as well as explore deeper romantic connections.

Rapp still found it difficult to enter the mind of a freshly out young woman after having spent nearly a year on Broadway as Regina George in Mean Girls the Musical.

Rapp, who is openly bisexual, claims that at times it felt “strange” to distinguish between her own sexual experiences and those of Leighton. Regarding the incredibly self-assured, affluent girl raised in Manhattan, Leighton, she remarks, “I don’t think I ever really dealt with those emotions as overtly as she did.” “I sort of… Just let it all hang out, badly.”

Rapp admits that she had to let certain things go, but she claims that Leighton’s courage in facing the challenges of coming to terms with her sexuality and subsequently telling her friends and family has given her strength. She adds, “It was a lot.”

The quartet successfully completes its first year at Essex in the season 2 finale. After recognizing Tatum represents the traits she wants to alter about herself—namely, being spoilt, negative, and a little bit of a snob—Leighton leaves her sorority Kappa, which she started the first season entirely intent on joining, and ditches her girlfriend Tatum to get back with her ex Alicia.
