The worldwide opening of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, Marvel’s 31st superhero extravaganza, is expected to bring in $225 million. The most current forecasts from earlier this week were $30 million off. The movie made $46 million on its first day of home release and another $52 million from other markets, bringing its total worldwide earnings to $98.6 million by Friday.

The third installment of the Ant-Man series, Quantumania, stars Paul Rudd as the (sometimes) diminutive superhero who transitions from being a minor criminal to a significant member of the Avengers. These films often draw fewer audiences than their larger Marvel Cinematic Universe predecessors, despite the fact that each Ant-Man movie has had a higher opening weekend box office haul than the one before it. While Ant-Man and the Wasp made $76 million in its first three days in 2018, Ant-Man and the Wasp made $57 million in its domestic opening weekend back in 2015. Ant-Man 3 is anticipated to gross at least $115 million domestically over the four-day extended President’s Day weekend and at least $100 million over the conventional three-day President’s Day holiday.

Internationally, the movie is doing as projected in Europe and South America, but Asia is bringing in lower box office receipts than planned. Now playing in 51 foreign countries, the movie is performing 30% better than the first Ant-Man, which brought in $519 million worldwide, and 24% worse than Ant-Man and the Wasp, which brought in $622 million worldwide. With China excluded, Ant-Man 3 is 4% ahead of Ant-Man 2, and 63% ahead of the first movie.

In China, where it received an unusual day-and-date release, the movie has so far made about $14 million, including Saturday sales that aren’t counted in the aforementioned figures. In the post-pandemic age, imports have virtually disappeared from the Middle Kingdom’s release schedule, which represents a significant shift from only a few years ago, when Hollywood studios seemed to be coming up with new tactics to target the Chinese market every week. The U.K. ($4.5 million), Mexico ($3.8 million), Korea ($3.2 million), France ($2.6 million), Australia ($2.4 million), Indonesia ($2.2 million), Germany ($2.2 million), Brazil ($1.9 million), and Italy ($1.5 million) are the top five foreign markets for Ant-Man 3 in terms of box office receipts. China is the film’s top international market.

Kang the Conqueror, the villain played by Jonathan Majors, gets a formal introduction in Ant-Man 3 as the MCU’s Phase Five begins. Despite the fact that the movie is currently one of the lowest-rated MCU productions on review site Rotten Tomatoes, the Kang character has received overwhelming acclaim.

The film’s forward-looking storytelling seems to have drawn the majority of the criticism, with less focus placed on making this one a satisfactory standalone experience and more on building the foundation for future films. The third Ant-Man movie has too much to set up to just be that, according to Collider’s Ross Bonaime, who gave it a mixed review. “Quantumania could’ve finally given us the entire possibility of what an Ant-Man and Wasp movie can be,” he said.

In addition to Evangeline Lilly as the Wasp, Michelle Pfeiffer as Janet van Dyne, Michael Douglas as Hank Pym, and Katherine Newton as Cassie Lang, the Peyton Reed-directed movie also stars Evangeline Lilly. Watch our conversation with Reed here, and keep checking Collider for further information.
