Jesus Revolution, a faith-based independent success from Lionsgate, simply cannot be stopped. For its third week at the US box office, the movie has made a staggering total of $45.5 million, continuing to surpass predictions. Jesus Revolution, which was directed by Jon Erwin and Brent McCorkle, has won the title of Lionsgate’s highest-grossing post-pandemic movie since 2019.

The movie studio performed well to generate interest in the movie before it was released by setting up the early church and university screenings, which surely sparked a greater interest. When the movie was released, this translated beautifully.

Since the film first opened in theatres three weeks ago, audiences have been drawn to it time and time again. In actuality, it was only expected to earn $7 million domestically in its first weekend. However, it dramatically outperformed this, earning a jubilant $15.5 million on its first weekend, more than doubling its projections. With an estimated $8.65 million produced in just that weekend, it continued to draw audiences in week two. Given the movie’s modest $15 million budget, it is clear that it has ventured well into the extremely lucrative ground.

Why is there a “Jesus Revolution”?

The independent film is set in the 1970s and tells the true story of a movement known as the “Jesus Revolution” that began as a spiritual awakening among a close-knit group of adolescent hippies in the middle of Southern California. The story of youth minister Greg Laurie (Joel Courtney) and his encounter with charismatic preachers Lonnie Frisbee (Jonathan Roumie) and pastor Chuck Smith (Kelsey Grammer) as they welcomed a throng of hippies who were intrigued by the seemingly novel perspective on Christianity are both closely explored in the movie.

It was a movement that, in the real world, would eventually grow from California to the rest of America and far beyond. It is frequently attributed to fusing Christian music with a more modern sound, which would inevitably more easily appeal to younger people.

Critics have often given the movie mixed reviews, while viewers seem to understand it far better. The domestic box office figures prove that the movie has won the audience’s unflinching approbation. It currently has a phenomenal 99% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on more than 5,000 reviews. It subsequently earned a gratifying A+ CinemaScore.
