In an interview, former US president Donald Trump declared his intention to impose tariffs exceeding 60% on Chinese goods if he secures victory in the upcoming US presidential election in November.

He emphasized the necessity of such actions, asserting, “We have to do it.” Mr. Trump, presently the front-runner for the Republican Party, confronts several criminal charges, including attempting to overturn the 2020 election results, all of which he has denied.

He has consistently leveled accusations against China, alleging unfair trading practices and intellectual property theft.

“You know, obviously I’m not looking to hurt China. I want to get along with China. I think it’s great. But they’ve taken advantage of our country,” the frontrunner for the Republican Party’s presidential nomination said.

During his presidency, Mr. Trump initiated a contentious trade war between the world’s two largest economies by imposing tariffs on hundreds of billions of dollars worth of Chinese goods.

The Trump administration commenced the imposition of tariffs in 2018, initially targeting Chinese imports with a focus on seafood to chemicals. The policy evolved to encompass duties on various goods later that year.

In response, Beijing imposed levies on US imports, including soybeans, wheat, and poultry.

The administration of current US President Joe Biden has largely maintained these tariffs, despite facing criticism that they have contributed to price increases and diminished the competitiveness of the United States.

For over two decades, the US has served as China’s largest export market. Nonetheless, there is growing bipartisan support among some Republican and Democrat lawmakers for reducing economic ties between the US and China. A recent House committee report recommended increased tariffs on imports from China and restrictions on Chinese investments in the US.
