Iran FM Abbas Araghchi says U.S. threats must end before talks on final deal can begin

Tanker incident near Oman may be linked to regional security and tensions involving Iran and the US.

Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said negotiations with the United States on a final agreement will not begin if threats continue.

In a post on X, Araghchi said millions of Iranians gathered to honor the country’s late supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and show national unity.

He said neither Iranian citizens nor the country’s armed forces were affected by threats. Araghchi also said the memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed with the United States was clear and called on Washington to respect its commitments.

Further more a tanker was struck by an unknown projectile while sailing off the coast of Oman, causing a fire but leaving all crew members unharmed, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) said.

Meanwhile, an analyst said a recent tanker incident near Oman may be linked to Iranian mine clearing operations, although the cause of the incident remains unclear.

Hossein Royvaran, a Tehran based analyst, said Iran has not yet released an official statement about the tanker incident.

He suggested that one possible explanation was that the vessel entered an area where Iranian teams were working to remove sea mines.

Royvaran said the waters near Oman may contain mines and the ship’s movement could have affected ongoing clearance operations.

The incident has added to concerns over regional security and tensions involving Iran and the United States.
