Bruno Guimaraes has stated his desire to become a “legend” at Newcastle United, and Eddie Howe is confident in his ability to achieve it.

With a two-goal performance in a win over Leicester City at St. James’ Park over the weekend, the former Lyon midfielder ensured the Magpies made a major step toward Premier League safety.

Guimaraes has already expressed his desire to win trophies on Tyneside, which pleased supporters. Now he wants to make sure his name is written in the history books of Newcastle.

“What a sensation, what a game, the squad deserves it,” remarked the Brazil international, who is 24 years old.

“It was fantastic to score two goals. I’m at a loss for words. It was fantastic to be the champion.”

“I’d want to express my gratitude to the audience for their wonderful energy.”

“It has always been an ambition of mine to play in the Premier League, and I am overjoyed. Here, I want to be a legend”, he added.

Heroes from the past, legends in their own right, have praised United’s recent $52-million acquisition.

Alan Shearer, the Premier League’s all-time leading scorer for Newcastle United, praised Guimaraes on Twitter, saying, “Boss, you’re the greatest.”

Can Guimaraes live up to his promise of being mentioned in the same breath as Shearer?

Howe, the head coach, isn’t betting against it.

“I will never impose a limit or a barrier on anyone.”

“A lot of it is going to be determined by what happens,” he added of Bruno’s assertions.

“I hope he has a bright future here, and I know what the squad can accomplish for him in terms of winning and achieving.”

“I believe the players and spectators can sense the player’s passion, how he celebrates, and how glad he is to be here.”

Guimaraes’ drive is contagious, but it comes with a lot of expectations. And if Newcastle United are to keep hold of their new star player in the coming years, they must live up to his expectations.

For the time being, Guimaraes says he’s happy to go along for the journey.

“I’ve always wanted to play in the Premier League; it’s always been a dream of mine, so it’s been a pleasure to play for Newcastle United.”

“We must remember that we must win at home, which we accomplished this time. We need to concentrate on the next game because we need to win at home. But today is a day of celebration.”

Leaving the final word to Howe, who was instrumental in securing a deal to sign one of Europe’s brightest prospects during the winter transfer window, the head coach admits he’s been surprised by how quickly the player has adjusted to life in England, especially given how difficult it is for many players to switch from foreign climes in the middle of the season.

“You can look at it from two perspectives: the person and the footballer,” Howe added.

“I believe the individual has settled in rapidly. Because he is a very peaceful and pleasant person, he has formed good friendships. In that regard, people have taken to him.”

“We were patient with the footballer because we didn’t want to expose him to the Premier League too soon when we had a successful club, but he has undoubtedly proven his worth behind the scenes.”

“He has immediately caught up the tempo, which isn’t often easy for newcomers to the Premier League”, he remarked.
