MUMBAI: Punjab Kings finished their season on a high note, thumping Sunrisers Hyderabad by five wickets in an insignificant final IPL league encounter here on Sunday.

Sunrisers Hyderabad batted first and only managed 157 for 8 on a decent batting track.

But it was never going to be enough, as Liam Livingstone shredded a weak SRH attack, scoring 49 not out off 22 balls and smashing the tournament’s 1000th six.

Shikhar Dhawan (39 off 32 balls) and Jitesh Sharma (19 off 7 balls) also made significant contributions to the team’s cause, as the chase was accomplished in 15.1 overs.

The Punjab Kings placed sixth in the 10-team league, having not entered the play-offs since their final appearance in 2014. The Sunrisers finished eighth in the high-spending IPL.

Livingstone smashed five massive sixes, while Dhawan had two fours and two sixes to his name.

Jonny Bairstow (23 off 15 balls) set the tone early on with a flurry of boundaries against Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Washington Sundar.

It aided Dhawan’s accumulation game as Punjab continued their all-out attack attitude despite Sunrisers dropping some sitters on the field.

Worst of all was Washington Sundar’s blunder, which occurred when Livingstine attempted to strike Jagadeesha Suchit against the turn and offered a dolly at point.

With Roamrio Shepherd’s 15th over going for 23 runs, there were far too many on-field blunders.

With wickets of Priyam Garg, Rahul Tripathi, and Aiden Markram, Arshdeep Singh (0/25 in 4 overs) celebrated his maiden India call-up with another economical session, but it was Harpreet Brar (3/26 in 4 overs), a state team colleague, who was the pick of the bowlers.

The game had little more than academic intrigue left in it after four qualifiers were already decided on Saturday, and the ‘Orange Army’ appeared tired and more like going through the motions while batting before sprucing up their scores in the final few overs.
