Marathon Sports, located in New England, and its brands soundRunner and Runner’s Alley, have been acquired by Fleet Feet. The purchase, which includes Marathon Sports’ e-commerce operation, is slated to finalise in July, coinciding with the retirement of current its owners Colin and Penny Peddie.

Marathon will continue to operate as an independent corporation under the names Marathon, soundRunner, and Runner’s Alley. Their  executive team will stay in place, and the company will continue to operate from its headquarters in Waltham, Massachusetts. Each site will continue to use its present shop name in all branding, marketing, and community engagement initiatives. Financial information will not be revealed.

“Since taking over Marathon  in 1992, Colin has grown into an enormously prominent industry leader, building an outstanding staff and organisation,” says Joey Pointer, CEO and president of Fleet Feet. “We knew we wanted to be a part of this legendary running brand and shop when we were provided with the chance.”

“This investment is a new step for Fleet Feet, with the goal of preserving the legacy and identity of the Marathon Sports brand in New England,” Pointer adds. “We are confident in a seamless transition during the acquisition and look forward to working with, and growing alongside, the entire team of Marathon s brands. We remain grateful to Colin for entrusting us to continue his life’s work, and we wish him the best with his well-deserved retirement.”

Marathon Sports began in 1975 as a single store in Cambridge, MA, and has now expanded to 11 it stores around the state as well as a substantial e-commerce presence. it bought Connecticut-based running company soundRunner and its four locations in 2013, and Runner’s Alley, a three-door running retailer in New Hampshire, two years later.
