Son Heung-min, a forward for Tottenham Hotspur, may need surgery to stabilize a fracture near his left eye, putting his participation in the FIFA World Cup 2022 in jeopardy.

The 30-year-old sustained an injury on Tuesday while Tottenham defeated Marseille 2-1 in the Champions League.

“Following surgery, Son will commence rehabilitation with our medical staff and we shall update supporters further in due course,” said a Spurs statement.

South Korea will face Uruguay in their opening World Cup game on November 24.

Tottenham has not yet disclosed the date of Son’s surgery or how long the former Bayer Leverkusen star would be sidelined.

It should be recalled that playmaker Kevin de Bruyne of Manchester City played for Belgium in the postponed 2020 European Championship 19 days after breaking his nose and eye socket in the 2021 Champions League final.

For his country, which is in Group H in Qatar with Uruguay, Ghana, and Portugal, Son has made 104 appearances and scored 35 goals.

For Spurs, the injury represents a short-term setback as they travel to Liverpool in the Premier League on Sunday.

Despite having played one extra game, Antonio Conte’s squad is presently third in the rankings, five points behind champions Arsenal.

They play away to Nottingham Forest in the third round of the Carabao Cup on November 9 and then host Leeds United at home on November 12 before the World Cup break.

Son’s play has drawn criticism this season, although on September 17, when his team defeated Leicester City 6-2, he scored a hat-trick after coming on in place of another player. On October 12, in the Champions League, Son scored twice against Eintracht Frankfurt.
