Former Pakistan speedster Umar Gul’s tenure as Afghanistan cricket team bowling coach has come to an end.

Gul, who was appointed in May 2022 and will serve till the end of the year, is pleased with his Afghanistan team.

“As my coaching stint with the Afghanistan Cricket Team comes to an end, I’m grateful to them for putting their trust in me. I had a wonderful time working with the team and coaching the boys with the best of my abilities. I wish them the very best in the future,” Gul tweeted.

After a successful stint as a bowling consultant at an Afghanistan training camp in April, the former right-armer was appointed.

The Afghanistan pacers improved significantly under Gul’s supervision, particularly during the Asia Cup and T20 World Cup.

With an outstanding career economy of 7.19, the 40-year-old made 237 international appearances for Pakistan across formats, claiming 179 wickets in 130 ODIs and 85 in 60 T20Is.

Rashid Khan, Afghanistan’s premier leg-spinner, was named T20I captain a few days ago, after senior all-rounder Mohammad Nabi, who stepped down following the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022.

“Rashid Khan is a massive name in Afghanistan cricket. He has colossal experience of playing the format around the world which will help him take the team to a new level in the format,” ACB Chairman Mirwais Ashraf said.

“Rashid Khan has the experience of leading AfghanAtalan in all three formats before and we are happy to have him as our skipper for the T20I format again. I am sure he will come out on top and will bring more glories to the nation,” he added.

Afghanistan is poised to tour the UAE in February, when they will face the hosts in three Twenty20 Internationals. This will be Rashid Khan’s first tour as Afghanistan’s captain following 2019.
