Brian Lara, a former captain and outstanding batsman for the West Indies, has volunteered to serve as a “performance mentor” for the team and academy. Cricket West Indies (CWI) made the announcement on Thursday.

Lara’s new responsibility, according to CWI, will be to “support the various head coaches in providing players with tactical advice and improving their game sense.”

Lara played 131 tests for the West Indies, scoring 11,953 runs at an average of 52.88. In One Day Internationals, he added 10,405 runs to his total.

The left-unbeaten hander’s 400 against England in Antigua in 2004 remains the record for the highest score in test innings.

Jimmy Adams, the Director of Cricket for the CWI, and Lara will collaborate on strategy and preparation for important competitions.

“Having spent time with the players and coaches in Australia and in discussions with CWI, I really believe that I can help the players with their mental approach to the game and with their tactics to be more successful,” Lara said.

“I’m looking forward to joining the group in Zimbabwe and the opportunity to work with other West Indies teams later in the year,” he added.

Adams said that Lara would provide “invaluable guidance and advice to our players and coaches. We are confident that Brian will help to improve our high-performance mindset and strategic culture that will bring us more success on the field across all formats. Everyone is excited to have Brian involved in supporting our players.”

Prior to the first Test, which begins in Bulawayo next week, Lara will be in Zimbabwe with the West Indies test team.

The 52-year-old recently participated in a three-person panel that reviewed West Indies’ early elimination from the Twenty20 World Cup.

According to the research, West Indies cricket may “cease to exist” if the problem of its players choosing to participate in international obligations before global Twenty20 tournaments is not fixed.
