Chelsea dropped more points in their Premier League quest
Chelsea's quest to reclaim a playoff spot in the Premier League table....
Another round of games are scheduled in the Premier League this week before the FA Cup at the conclusion of the week. Tuesday night’s featured matchup pits league-leading Arsenal against third-place Newcastle United.
Arsenal has won its opening two games of the holiday break with some outstanding play, showing no signs of being affected by the World Cup break or Gabriel Jesus’ injury. A victory would put Arsenal 10 points ahead of Manchester City, which will travel to Chelsea on Thursday night.
Newcastle’s six-game winning streak was ended by Leeds United, but Eddie Howe’s team has only suffered one loss all year and will be optimistic about leaving with something from their trip to the Emirates Stadium.
With Marcos Rashford consistently scoring goals for Manchester United under Erik Ten Hag, they should have little trouble defeating a Bournemouth team, whose coach Gary O’Neil is eager to add players to strengthen their roster.
Brendan Rodgers is still without England international James Maddison and attacker Patson Daka against Marco Silva’s well-rehearsed team as Leicester City hosts an outstanding Fulham, according to Xinhua.
Everton must build on their draw against Manchester City as they host Brighton in the meantime.
On Wednesday, two games take place near the bottom of the standings, with Southampton hosting third-from-last Nottingham Forest. Forest will benefit from its tie with Chelsea at home, while Southampton is still searching for its first victory under new coach Nathan Jones.
After West Ham’s most recent loss to Brentford, David Moyes said that his career was on the line unless he could snap a five-match losing streak in the league. He also predicted a difficult evening away to Leeds United, who might have Patrick Bamford back in the attack.
Aston Villa, led by Unai Emery, take on Wolverhampton Wanderers, led by Julen Lopetegui, in a Midlands derby at Villa Park.
Since Emery took charge, Villa has won three of its last four league games, and Wolves, despite a close loss to Manchester United on New Year’s Eve, are showing signs of improvement under Lopetegui, and an extra day of rest could work in their favour.
Coach Antonio Conte is under further scrutiny after Tottenham’s Sunday loss to Aston Villa at home; the Italian needs a strong performance when Spurs travel nearby to play Crystal Palace.
Tottenham’s offence against Villa appeared lifeless, and Conte’s choices for a change-up are restricted because both Richarlison and Lucas Moura are still injured.
Ben Chilwell, Reese James, N’Golo Kante, and Wesley Fofana’s injuries continue to cause issues for Chelsea coach Graham Potter, and playing Manchester City on Thursday is definitely not a good idea.
At home against Everton, Pep Guardiola’s team committed the mistake of squandering opportunities. At Stamford Bridge, where World Cup champion Julian Alvarez is expected to be available for the first time since Qatar 2022, they are likely to be more focused.
