Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, and Paraguay unveiled their formal joint proposal to host the 2030 FIFA World Cup in Montevideo, exactly 100 years after the competition was first hosted.
Alejandro Dominguez, head of the Conmebol South American federation, stated in Argentina: “We are persuaded that FIFA has an obligation to recognise the memories of those who staged the first World Cup.”
At the Argentine Football Association (AFA) headquarters in Ezeiza, south of Buenos Aires, he was present for a launch event.
There will be more competition until FIFA selects a host in 2024.
The major competition for the South Americans is a joint effort from Spain, Portugal, and Ukraine that has the support of UEFA, the European soccer’s governing body.
Along with Egypt and Greece, Saudi Arabia is thinking about submitting a proposal to host.
In December, Dominguez said that by giving South America the right to host the World Cup in 2030, FIFA will pay tribute to the legacy of legends like Pele and Diego Maradona.
In the final of the 13-team World Cup that Uruguay hosted in Montevideo in 1930, Uruguay defeated Argentina 4-2 to become the first-ever world champion.
Argentina currently holds the title after defeating France in Qatar the previous year.
The United States, Mexico, and Canada will co-host the 2026 World Cup, which will include 48 teams instead of the previous 32.
