Gavin Larsen, New Zealand selector, has made the decision to leave New Zealand Cricket and join the Warwickshire County Cricket Club as the high-performance Director (WCCC).

According to an announcement from the New Zealand Cricket on Friday, Larsen and his wife Karen will relocate to England and set up residence at the WCCC’s headquarters in Edgbaston, where he will be in charge of managing the county’s high-performance men’s and women’s programmes.

Before being named the Black Caps’ selection manager in 2015, Larsen, a former New Zealand Test and ODI player, served as Cricket Wellington’s CEO and the World Cup’s Cricket Operations Manager in 2014.

The Black Caps participated in the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup Final and the 2021 ICC T20 World Cup Final in the years that followed. They also won the first-ever ICC World Test Championship and, at various points, held the No. 1 global ranking in each of the three forms.

Larsen expressed his sincere gratitude to NZC for giving him the chance to work with Mike Hesson and Gary Stead, the two most successful Black Caps coaches.

“The past seven and a half years have just flown by and I’ve relished and enjoyed every minute of it,” Larsen said.

“The discussions and deliberations have always been robust and challenging but my enduring memory will always be the quality of the people I’ve worked with — from high performance right through to the administration.

“The relationships with everyone: Major Association coaches, BLACKCAPS support staff, the players, and the team at NZC, have always been underpinned by a real sense of trust and goodwill. I’ve had the time of my life.” Larsen said the new role at Edgbaston represented a new chapter in his career.

“I’m excited and thrilled to be joining Warwickshire. WCCC is a club with an amazing history and tradition and I’m looking forward to joining the team and helping to drive the club’s ongoing success.

“I have several great memories of playing at Edgbaston during my New Zealand playing days and the atmosphere were simply terrific.”

Bryan Stronach, GM High-Performance at NZC, promised that the search for Larsen’s replacement would start as soon as possible.
