Lionel Messi, the Argentina and Paris Saint-Germain star, was the target of a threatening message left by armed men after a shootout in his hometown of Rosario, Santa Fe.

Two gunmen reportedly opened fire on a supermarket that Messi’s in-laws and his wife, Antonella Roccuzzo, owned.

There were no reported casualties, but a letter addressed to the seven-time FIFA Player of the Year was left on the doorstep.

“Messi, we are waiting for you, (Pablo) Javkin (the mayor) is also a narco, he will not take care of you,” according to the message.

The incident drew the attention of Argentina’s federal ministers because it involved one of the country’s greatest athletes.

The mayor of Rosario, Pablo Javkin, went to the supermarket and blasted federal authorities for failing to curb a surge in drug-related violence in the city, which is about 190 miles northwest of Buenos Aires.

Celia Arena, Santa Fe’s justice minister, described the attack as “terrorism” carried out by a “mafia” group in order to intimidate the general public.

Lionel Messi and Antonella did not respond to the shootout on any of their social media platforms.

Argentina will play in front of its supporters for the first time since winning the World Cup when Messi’s team takes on Panama in Buenos Aires on March 23 and Curacao in the northern city of Santiago del Estero five days later. Messi is currently in Paris.
