The Peshawar High Court has issued important directions to the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) regarding inappropriate content on TikTok. The court emphasized the need to make the social media regulatory authority fully active.

A citizen, Saqib Rehman, filed a petition against the growing spread of offensive content in TikTok live sessions, especially videos in the Pashto language. He said these live sessions are being used to promote obscenity.

According to the petition, some TikTok creators deliberately use obscene gestures, offensive language, abusive remarks, and insulting behavior towards women to increase viewership and earn money. Many of these live sessions run from evening until late at night, violating moral standards.

PTA’s lawyer, Jahanzeb Mehsud, told the court that the authority is already blocking illegal content and has created a portal for complaints regarding offensive material.

The court directed TikTok to remove inappropriate content and said that institutions working under the Peca Act also need to stay active in regulating such material.
