Denmark’s energy agency has issued a first-level “early warning” alert citing concerns around its gas supply, expressing uncertainty over Russian energy supplies as a result of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

The European Union has put in place a mechanism that enables member states to advise each other about imminent power supply problems using a three level alert system: starting with “early warning,” then “alert,” and last “emergency.”

The approach provides for mutual aid from other EU members, but it may also signal the start of supply rationing.

Martin Hansen, the Danish Energy Agency’s deputy head, issued the first level alert on Monday.

“We are in a terrible situation,” Hansen said in a statement, “and it has been aggravated by the cut in supplies.”

Denmark’s gas inventories are currently roughly 75% filled, according to the agency, “and gas has been added in recent days.”

The announcement comes after Orsted, a Danish energy provider, stated at the end of May that Russian gas deliveries to the Scandinavian country would be blocked as of June 1 due to Orsted’s refusal to pay in rubles.

Gas accounts for 18% of Denmark’s annual energy consumption. Three-quarters of the gas consumed in 2019 was produced domestically.

According to the Danish Energy Agency, Russia is one of the biggest sources of natural gas imports.

The Netherlands also announced on Monday that it will ease coal-fired power generation limits, a day after Germany and Austria made similar steps to reduce their reliance on Russian gas imports.
