We know that big birds have been on Earth for millions of years because we have found fossils and read about them in old books. But what most people don’t know is that there are still large species around us that are alive and well. The Harpy Eagle is the perfect example of this.

Many online users were astonished to see a picture of this massive bird and felt it was either digitally manipulated or a person disguised as an animal. Thousands were shocked to learn that the harpy eagle exists.

One of the largest bird species alive, many specimens were the size of an adult human. It weighs 4–20 pounds and has a 6.5-foot wingspan (the female doubles the weight of the male). Its claws can grow to over 5 inches, larger than a human hand.

It lives in rainforests in Central America, Colombia, Venezuela, Peru, Brazil, Paraguay, and northern Argentina. The carnivorous harpy eagle can carry 70% of its weight. They hunt sloths, coatis, and monkeys.

The Harpy Eagle is a deadly predator because it hunts animals twice its size and has enormous, sharp claws.

Despite being a protected species, poachers hunt these birds for their feathers, putting them at risk of extinction.
