DG ISI

In October 2021, the Prime Minister’s Office notified the appointment of Lt Gen Nadeem Anjum as the Director-General Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI). He replaced Lt Gen Faiz Hameed and took charge in November 2021.

The appointment has stoked controversy as then Prime Minister Imran Khan’s reluctance to notify Nadeem Anjum’s appointment strained civil-military ties. The appointment of the ISI chief is not clearly mentioned in the Constitution or Army Act but is considered the prime minister’s prerogative.

At the beginning of October 2021, Prime Minister Imran Khan had formally received three names from the Chief of Army Staff regarding the appointment of a new ISI chief.

Lt Gen Nadeem Anjum’s nomination was already approved following an announcement by the DG ISPR. However, the PM’s secretariat did not issue a notification in this regard until 26 October 2021.

Prime Minister Imran Khan announced to consult for this crucial assignment. Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry had denied reports that the prime minister wanted to interview candidates for the DG ISI’s post but said the procedure would be followed.

This led to a deadlock over the appointment of the spymaster for three weeks until the matter was resolved between the civil and military leadership.

In December 2021, DG ISI Lt Gen Nadeem Anjum asked all authorities concerned not to release his picture or video footage to the media made during any official meeting.
