The silver screen will turn blue once more on December 16 as James Cameron’s eagerly anticipated sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water, welcomes us back to the mythical world of Pandora.

Moviegoers will be able to see the sequel to what is still the highest-grossing movie of all time — at least internationally — 13 years after we are first introduced to this wonderful otherworldly land.

Even as the days until the release of this long-delayed sequel in mid-December get shorter, it is still unclear what will happen. We now know that the critically acclaimed Canadian singer The Weeknd will contribute a brand-new song to this incredibly expensive sequel thanks to his Twitter account.

But just like the film, we’ve only seen a tiny portion of what’s to come. We thankfully won’t have to wait long, so it’s all right.

Simply “12.16.22,” followed by the logo for the sequel and a brief sample of the music, is all that is written in the tweet.

It’s a choral track with escalating battle drums that break up the large “A” that takes up the entire frame. You’re out of luck if you want to know more about what this music will contain.

We’ll have to patiently wait until closer to the movie’s release before learning more about the R&B musician’s contribution to Avatar: The Way of Water, but we should find out more about the enigmatic song in due time.

The 2009 film Avatar featured numerous spectacles and the inventive and magnificent score of the late James Horner, but it isn’t particularly well-known for its hit singles.

Contrasted with Celine Dion’s iconic performance of “My Heart Will Go On” from Titanic becoming an enduring radio mainstay, the fact that no songs were inspired by it to make the top 40 tracks is rather noteworthy.

There is no guarantee that whatever The Weeknd creates for this new movie will have the same impact on pop culture and cinema, but at least he is in good company. You never bet against Cameron, and if this movie has the same kind of historic success (no pun intended) as his first two movies, it might help to further establish The Weeknd as one of our top performers.

But as we have previously stated and most likely will again, we must wait and see what transpires.

The Weeknd has definitely contributed to the soundtrack of a movie before. Notably, his song “Earned It,” which was featured in Fifty Shades of Grey, earned him an Oscar nomination.

The Weeknd is also the composer of “Devil May Cry,” which was featured in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. Avatar: The Way of Water may surpass those films despite their high-profile debuts, but that’s assuming that it will enjoy the same fame and success as its predecessor.

Even Cameron is currently unsure of how this film will perform in comparison to his previous two releases. However, if there is any wise counsel in Hollywood, it is that James Cameron should not be backed by the public. We will soon be able to hear this new song thanks to The Weeknd taking that advice to heart.

Avatar: The Way of Water will have its international premiere in theatres on December 16th, as the musician mentions in his original tweet.

Here is a preview of The Weeknd’s newest song:
