The veteran actor’s performance in The Fabelmans was honoured on Tuesday in the Best Supporting Actor category of the 2023 Academy Award nominations.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences lists Hirsch as the second-oldest acting candidate to date. Hirsch played Uncle Boris in the Steven Spielberg movie.

The record was reached by the late Christopher Plummer, who was 88 years old when he received a nomination for All the Money in the World in 2018.

Three days after the March Oscars ceremony, Hirsch will be 88. For Ordinary People, he was previously nominated in the category of Best Supporting Actor in 1981.

The previous record, 41 years, was held by the late Henry Fonda; the current period of 42 years between acting nominations breaks that mark. In 1941, Fonda was nominated for Best Actor in The Grapes of Wrath, and in 1982, he was awarded Best Actor in On Golden Pond.

Barry Keoghan (The Banshees of Inisherin), Brendan Gleeson (The Banshees of Inisherin), Brian Tyree Henry (Causeway), and Ke Huy Quan are the other candidates in the category besides Hirsch (Everything Everywhere All at Once).
