LAHORE: The Punjab government has officially approved the celebration of the Basant festival, scheduled to take place on February 6, 7, and 8, sources confirmed on Wednesday.

According to government sources, no individual or group will be allowed to violate rules and safety regulations during the festival. Special QR-coded kites and string will be introduced to ensure monitoring and compliance.

Authorities have clearly stated that aerial firing, hooliganism, and other dangerous activities will not be tolerated during the festivities.

Earlier, an ordinance signed by Governor Punjab Saleem Haider granted conditional approval for Basant celebrations across the province.

Under the ordinance:

Kite flying is being allowed after 25 years, as the ban was first imposed in 2001.

Children under 18 years will not be permitted to fly kites — violations will hold parents/guardians responsible.

Only thread-based string will be allowed; metallic or sharp strings are strictly banned.

Offenders could face 3 to 5 years of imprisonment and fines up to Rs 2 million.

All motorcycles must be operated according to the prescribed safety guidelines during the festival days.

Authorities have urged the public to enjoy the festival responsibly, ensuring safety and law compliance throughout the province.
