LAHORE: Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has decided to rename Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore and hand over the renovation and maintenance of Stadium to a sponsoring company.

The PCB now wants to get rid of Muammar Gaddafi’s name which was proposed by Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto.

Confirming the renaming of Gaddafi Stadium, PCB chairman Rameez Raja said that the sponsoring company would rename the stadium after the word “Gaddafi” while the name change was purely for financial gain and to upgrade the stadium.

The stadium was originally named Lahore Stadium, built in 1959, but when Gaddafi visited Lahore in 1974, he spoke at the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) in favour of Pakistan’s acquisition of nuclear weapons after which the Prime Minister Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto named the Lahore Stadium after Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi.

Rameez Raja said that apart from Gaddafi Stadium Lahore and National Stadium Karachi, other stadiums have been allowed to rename by the commercial companies.
