Nottinghamshire is on the edge of collapsing. Nobody should write their own obituary since there has been no stronger T20 side in England in recent times, but two wins in six, along with a 23-run loss to Yorkshire at Headingley, left them with more than enough to do as the North Group nears its mid-point.

Yorkshire’s total of 202 had put them well ahead of the game, especially when Notts collapsed to 50 for 5 in the eighth over, but word was going out that it was nine fewer than Boris Johnson’s No Confidence vote, and he must be scared sick, so nothing could be taken for granted.

Yorkshire had not beaten Notts since 2017 and had to defend their score on another strong Leeds batting surface, which added to the doubts. They’d often looked at the Outlaws and thought to themselves, “If only we dared to play like this.” Steven Mullaney and Dan Christian, two veteran stagers, had the foresight to play the game close and capitalize on their opponent’s insecurity – their stand 114 off 66. Mullaney’s contribution was a T20-best 79 from 46 balls, but after he flat-batted Jordan Thompson to the extra cover boundary, they never looked like they’d find another 47 runs in the last three overs.

Throughout it all, a Yorkshire player who did not make the final XI was a constant source of concern. Tom Kohler-long-term Cadmore’s concussion issues forced him out after only three games back, but against this ominous backdrop, Jonny Tattersall stepped in behind the stumps and seized the opportunity to resurrect a career that had been hanging by a thread with an unbeaten 48 from 30 balls of growing self-belief.

Jonny Tattersall was released by Yorkshire as a young professional before being re-signed by Andrew Gale, who believed that all he needed was to establish a more positive presence in order to have a successful career. However, Gale was fired from his coaching post last winter, one of many who were fired as a result of the Azeem Rafiq racist claims. Late last season, Tattersall had lost his Championship position to Harry Duke, a young buck, and had also been stood down in T20.

Tattersall isn’t a pretty brilliant batsman, but arriving at the crease with the score at 123 for 4 from 11.5 overs provided an ideal opportunity to strike. Will Fraine batted alongside him, scratching and clawing his way to 19 from 20 balls – it’s no joke to suggest that, now that tactical Retired Outs are popular, Fraine should have been stood down for Thompson a few of overs before his removal. If there is a rule, follow it.

Jonny  Tattersall later said that it wasn’t the easiest wicket to start an innings on, and that rotating the strike while waiting for a boundary was strategically sensible, but it appeared from the outside that their early prudence at only four-down was excessive. Tattersall’s innings progressed, with his hop down the pitch to knock Samit Patel straight for six indicating rising intent, and their 65-run stand in 42 balls finding purpose just in time.

Apart from that, Yorkshire’s batting strategy appears to be more bold this season, despite their erratic outcomes. With Finn Allen at the top of the list, how could there not be? Two straight sixes in a row against Jake Ball signalled his impending doom, until Ball lbw on the rear leg with the next. Adam Lyth, who shared Allen’s goal, found a way to get his stump clipped. His failure to bowl out his stint was a surprise, as he finished with 3 for 29.

Harry Brook’s return from an inactive England call-up strengthened a Yorkshire batting line-up that has been strained to the limit without Kohler-Cadmore. With a 76-run stand in 37 balls, Brook and David Willey set the tone for the innings. Both could have died early on – Ball and Luke Fletcher both beat Brook’s inner edge before he had relaxed – but after surviving, he revealed a now-familiar array of risk-free shots. With inches to spare, Willey chipped Calvin Harrison over a somewhat statuesque Joe Clarke at deep square leg.

Notts’ spinners, on the other hand, began to make inroads. Harrison caught Willey at long-off for 34 runs, and Patel bowled Brook as he made room to clear the cover region.

Willey was crucial to Yorkshire’s success on the field. Early swing was available, and he took advantage of it by bowling Alex Hales for a golden duck two balls into the chase. Clarke gloved an attempted pull in the next over, Tattersall made sufficient ground down the leg-side to salvage a low catch, and Patel inside-edged one onto leg stump as West Indian Dominic Drakes struck twice in as many deliveries in the second over.

However, even after the 16th was completed, the outcome led to uncertainty. Thompson craves variation in such situations, and Adil Rashid did not bowl out this time. With 67 required from five overs, Willey went to himself for the vital 16th over. Mullaney took two runs as he was ruled in at both ends, so he was denied a double run-out claim, but he did enough just to keep the game out of Nottinghamshire’s reach.
