Minjee Lee on Saturday set a 54-hole record at the US Women’s Open and surged three shots ahead of the competition.

The Australian shot a four-under 67 to get to 13-under 200 after the first three rounds, shattering Juli Inkster’s 1999 record of 201.

After recovering from a bogey on the par-three fifth hole with a birdie on the par-four sixth, the seven-time LPGA Tour winner stepped up her game with four straight birdies beginning on the ninth.

“When I was on the run of birdies, I wasn’t too nervous,” Lee said.

“I think coming down the stretch a little bit more, just with more people maybe, just a little bit more pressure.

“I’m pretty calm. My personality is pretty calm anyway. I don’t think I get too high or too low. I think that’s a strength of mine.”

Mina Harigae, who began the day tied for the lead with Lee, shot a 70 to go to 10 under par at Pine Needles.
