Caroline Garcia, a French tennis player, came back from being down a set and won a spectacular match against Daria Kasatkina, a Russian player, 4-6, 6-1, 7-6(5) in 80 minutes. With this victory, Caroline Garcia went to the semifinals of the WTA Finals, which took place on Sunday in Singapore.

This match was a black-and-white, winner-take-all affair, unlike any of the other scenarios and permutations that may have occurred throughout the round-robin play at the WTA Finals.

Following in the footsteps of Francoise Durr (1972 and 1973) and Mary Pierce, Garcia is the third French player to reach the semifinals in her first two appearances at the WTA Finals (1993 and 1994).

“It’s definitely a great achievement. I was already really proud to be in the Top 8. I don’t really know if I realise that this is the semifinal tomorrow. It proves that this year was definitely a good year. I started very far from the Top 10, the Top 8, and I make my way to it. Today, it’s one more thing that proves my game style is working and I have to keep going that way,” The World Tennis Association (WTA) cited Garcia as saying.

“I tried to stay very positive, keep fighting, try to play aggressively, even if she is probably the best defensive player in the world and such a fighter,” Garcia said in her on-court interview. “We have kind of very opposite games, so it made some great rallies.” “I had a crisis of panic, I think I lose my mind a little bit,” Garcia said. “Obviously, she was bringing back a lot of balls and I went for too much. Second set was very good. Third set was a battle.”   Garcia recovered himself after dropping four games in a row, which was nearly entirely foreseeable, and cruised to victory in the second set. Her winning streak was extended when Kasatkina committed a double fault in the first game of the third set, which she ultimately lost.

But Kasatkina managed to pull off two fantastic shots just when she needed them the most in order to break Garcia’s serve when the score was 3-2. The first point she won came from a retrieved drop shot that she forehand-flicked to score in the other direction.

Garcia came back from a deficit of 3-4 to win a game that had a total of 14 points, lasted nearly nine minutes, and was decided by a powerful ace. The ninth game, which ended after more than 13 minutes and was an epic, was played when the score was 4-4. In spite of the fact that Garcia had nine deuces, four double faults, and six opportunities to break serve, Kasatkina prevailed thanks to a Garcia forehand that went out of play.

In a manner befitting the situation, it was resolved by going to a shootout, where Garcia emerged victorious by virtue of his superiority of one shot and a memorable point in the match.
