The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) made the announcement on Wednesday that uncapped leg-spinner Rehan Ahmed has been named to England’s Men’s Test team for the upcoming tour of Pakistan.

During the three-day warm-up fixtures for England Lions versus the Test squad in the training camp in Abu Dhabi, the 18-year-old pleased the coaching team with his attitude and genuine potential. As a result, he has been added to the senior squad.

If selected during the three-match Test series — the first time England is playing in Pakistan in 17 years — Rehan will become the youngest player to play Test cricket for England men, surpassing Yorkshire’s Brian Close, who represented the three lions against New Zealand in July 1949 at the age of 18 years and 149 days. If selected during the series, Rehan will become the youngest player to play Test cricket for England men.

“Ben Stokes, myself, and the rest of the coaches appreciate how he handles his game,” England Men’s red-ball head coach Brendon McCullum stated, acknowledging that the teenager is “not the final piece.” McCullum went on to say that “we like how he approaches his game.”

“We know he’s not the finished article and has raw potential, but Ben (Stokes), myself and the rest of the coaches like how he approaches his game. The experience of being part of the squad in Pakistan will be hugely beneficial for him, and he will add to the make-up of our squad,” said McCullum.

During the ICC Men’s Under-19 World Cup in 2022, Rehan took an impressive 12 wickets in four matches for England, averaging 12.58 runs per match. He was England’s second-highest wicket-taker overall.

The series will begin on December 1 with the first Test match being played at Rawalpindi, followed by the next two matches being played in either Multan or Karachi.
