Mystery bowler Abrar records seven hits as Pakistan knocks England for 281....
Abrar Ahmed, a mystery spinner who formerly played tape-ball cricket before making it onto the Test squad, had a great debut for his Test career today against England, collecting five wickets. Abrar became the 252nd player from Pakistan to play Test cricket when Babar Azam, the team’s captain, selected him at the toss for the second of the three Tests against England.
Abrar was born in Karachi, but his ancestors are from a little town in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Mansehra area named Shinkiari.
While participating in a game of tape-ball cricket in Karachi’s Lines Area, the 24-year-old became interested in the sport. In 2020, while representing Sindh in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy match against Southern Punjab, the bowler made his first-class debut.

He now has 76 wickets at an average of 25.56 in 26 first-class innings, with top match stats of 11-63. Interestingly, when he first started playing cricket, Abrar had never heard of the renowned Pakistani leg-spinner Abdul Qadir. Five years ago, Mushtaq Ahmed, the then-head coach of Pakistan’s National Cricket Academy in Lahore, asked Abrar about Qadir. Abrar responded, “Who is he, never heard his name.”
Abrar’s cricket mentor is West Indies spinner Sunil Narine, according to his coach Mohammad Masroor.
As a result of his outstanding performance in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy 2022–2023, Abrar won his first call-up to the Test squad prior to this series.
The 24-year-old right-arm spinner led the field in wickets taken with 43 in seven games, all at an average of 21.95, and was named the best bowler of the competition.
